Thousands of photos, countless unforgettable moments, and one important lesson: no two Maldives islands are ever the same.

There's a reason the Maldives sits at the top of so many travel wish lists. The iconic overwater villas, crystal-clear lagoons and impossibly white beaches are as beautiful as the photographs suggest.

But after spending two weeks island hopping across the Maldives, our team came home with one overwhelming conclusion:

No two islands are the same.

At the beginning of June, four members of the Travel Den team - Gilli, Sarah, Emma and Judith - spent two weeks island hopping across the Maldives, staying at eight very different resorts across four atolls. They slept in beach villas and overwater villas. They snorkelled colourful house reefs, sampled countless restaurants, toured family suites, visited spas, spoke with resort managers and learnt exactly what makes each island unique.

And one thing became clear almost immediately...

The Maldives isn't one destination. It's hundreds of completely different holidays.

From vibrant lifestyle resorts with DJs and pool parties to tiny castaway islands where you won't see another soul, every resort has its own personality. That's why choosing the right island is far more important than simply choosing the prettiest one.

It's worth remembering just how much the Maldives has changed. Not so long ago, it was home to only a handful of resorts. Today there are nearly 200 - each with its own character, setting and ideal guest. With that much choice, there really is something for everyone. But it also means expert guidance and local knowledge matter more than ever.

So rather than simply telling you where we stayed, here's our guide to each resort, followed by the biggest lessons we brought home.

Dusit Thani - BAA Atoll

Best for: Guests seeking fine dining and exquisite service, complete relaxation, and a 360-degree house reef

Set within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll, Dusit Thani offers understated luxury in an incredibly peaceful setting. Its famous house reef, exceptional service and opportunities to experience manta rays make it one of the Maldives' most special resorts.

The fine dining here was excellent, and the wines certainly matched! Whilst you don't have huge choice of eateries, the quality and variety means you wouldn't notice.

There is a sense of unhurried peace here, with quiet low-key entertainment if you want it, but this is a little slice of heaven if you just need to completely unwind.

Top tip: Try the chef's tasting menu!

The Standard - RAA Atoll

Best for: Younger couples, friends and families with teenagers

Forget the stereotype that every Maldives resort is quiet and sleepy. The Standard combines luxury with personality, offering DJs, pool parties, creative dining and stylish villas while still delivering exceptional service and fantastic snorkelling. Rather than a luxury resort, it describes itself as a lifestyle resort and we can really see why!

The villas were fun and spacious, even had huge disco balls above the huge baths in the bathrooms. All snorkelling and swimming gear was provided in the villas as well, rather than from the water sports centre. The resort offers plenty of activities and we even got to try out an aerial gong bath which we would highly recommend.

Restaurants were varied and plenty with a good buffet option, and an all day snack type bar with pizzas, chips, halloumi fries and more - perfect for poolside nibbling if you just want something picky! Then a choice of a la carte restaurants, and if you are premium all-inclusive, the local lobster is included and was absolutely outstanding! We even had a cooking class which was a real highlight.

Top tip: Go for a water villa ocean side rather than lagoon side if you want to snorkel and access the reef directly from your private decking.

Madifushi Private Island - Meemu Atoll

Best for: Honeymoons, anniversaries and luxury escapes

Reaching Madifushi feels like discovering a hidden corner of the Maldives. Located in the beautiful Meemu Atoll, the island enjoys an incredibly private and exclusive setting, making it ideal for anyone looking to truly switch off.

From the moment we arrived, the welcome was exceptional. The service throughout our stay was warm, attentive and genuinely personal, while the villas were some of the most beautiful we experienced during the trip - stylish, spacious and perfectly designed for a relaxing island escape.

The dining was of a very good standard, although with fewer restaurant options than some similarly priced resorts, guests looking for extensive culinary variety may find the choice a little more limited.

Madifushi is still a relatively young resort and, as it continues to evolve, it has enormous potential. The accommodation, service and stunning location already provide all the foundations for a truly exceptional Maldives experience.

Top tip: Make sure to book a snorkelling excursion during your stay which will take you out to nearby reefs to see reef sharks, tropical fish and turtles.

OBLU Helengeli - outskirts of the Male Atoll

Best for: Snorkelers, families and visitors looking for excellent value for money.

Located just a 50-minute speedboat transfer from Malé, OBLU Helengeli offers one of the best house reefs we experienced during the trip. The island feels natural and relaxed, with great service from staff who are clearly really happy to be there. With spacious beach villas, excellent family accommodation with 2 bedroom villas for families of up to 6 as well as overwater options.

The reef is accessible from the beach, meaning you can snorkel whenever you like, for as long as you like. A real bonus for those that really like a calm and relaxed snorkel without needing to plan ahead.

The main buffet restaurant was great with an air-conditioned separate area for the chilled foods like salads and desserts, but also 2 a la carte restaurants to choose from for a change.

Top tip: There are lagoon villas you enter over land but have decks over the water here - you can get in the water but can't access the reef directly from here so these are an amazing price point for the experience and views you get!

Furaveri - RAA Atoll

Best for: Couples, families and travellers seeking an authentic Maldives experience

Lush tropical vegetation, spacious villas and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere make Furaveri feel like the Maldives many people imagine. It offers excellent value without compromising comfort and is ideal for those wanting an authentic, traditional island experience.

It has a reef accessible from the beach on one side of the island, though it may be more limited than others. However, there is a dive and water sports centre that will arrange boat trips if you want more.

The a la carte restaurants here were lovely and we met the culinary director who was somewhat of a celebrity in his own right!

Furaveri offers really good value and would suit both couples and families looking for a genuine Maldives experience rather than ultra-luxury.

Top tip: A must try is the seafood restaurant with infinity ocean views - absolutely incredible.

"Furaveri feels like a tropical island and was one of the greenest resorts we visited. The spa was excellent and the snorkelling was fab. All in all it felt like a true Maldivian experience" - Judith

Emerald Maldives - RAA Atoll

Best for: Luxury family holidays and multi-generational trips with plenty to see and do.

A scenic 35–40 minute seaplane flight brings you to Emerald Maldives, where a warm Maldivian welcome awaits. From there, you'll be whisked to your villa by golf buggy, giving you your first glimpse of this beautifully designed island.

The villas are spacious, modern, light and airy. Emerald Maldives is particularly well-suited to families, with exceptional facilities throughout the island. The kids' club in particular is amongst the best we have seen and the children were all having the time of their lives! There is a choice of a la carte restaurants and the best thing is it's all included in the deluxe package.

Top tip: Emerald's Deluxe All Inclusive package is one of the best in the Maldives, so make the most of the speciality restaurants and a la carte dining included within your stay.

Emerald Faarufushi

Best for: Honeymooners, couples and perhaps families with slightly older children

Just a short speedboat ride from Emerald Maldives (or a scenic seaplane transfer from Malé), Emerald Faarufushi is its smaller sister resort - but the atmosphere couldn't feel more different.

With just 80 villas, the island has a wonderfully intimate feel from the moment you arrive. The welcome was one of the warmest we experienced, with the team waiting to greet us on arrival and making us feel instantly at home. Each villa also comes with a dedicated butler, and trust us... you'll soon wonder how you ever holidayed without one!

The service here really stood out. Friendly, relaxed and genuinely personal, it felt as though every member of staff took the time to get to know their guests.

The dining was another real highlight, with an excellent choice of restaurants and one of the best buffet restaurants we experienced during the trip - something we weren't expecting to say!

Although rough sea conditions meant we couldn't explore the house reef ourselves (one of the realities of travelling during the off-season), we were told it's excellent and easily accessible directly from the island, making it a fantastic option for keen snorkellers.

Top tip: Challenge Resort Manager Patrick to a game of padel and if you win, he promises a free holiday!

Hulhule Island Hotel

Best for: Airport stopovers

Conveniently located beside Malé International Airport, Hulhule Island Hotel is the perfect overnight option before or after a resort transfer. It's not somewhere we'd recommend for a week-long Maldives escape, but as an airport hotel it's comfortable, convenient and takes the stress out of early departures or late arrivals.

Our Maldives Q&A

After visiting eight resorts, these are the questions we found ourselves answering most often.

�� Does the atoll you stay in make a difference?

Absolutely - and in our experience it's one of the first things worth thinking about. During our trip we visited North Malé, Baa, Raa and Meemu Atolls , and each had its own distinct character. North Malé is great for easy speedboat transfers, Baa is famous for its incredible marine life and manta rays, Raa gave us a fantastic mix of very different luxury resorts, while Meemu felt peaceful, private and wonderfully remote.

Because most atolls offer a choice of resorts, the atoll you choose really can shape the whole feel of your holiday - the marine life on your doorstep, the transfer, the atmosphere and the pace of your days. It's often the bigger decision to get right first, and once you've settled on the atoll that suits you, that's where our first-hand experience helps you choose the perfect resort within it.

��Natural or reclaimed islands - what difference does it make?

For us, there's something genuinely special about a naturally formed island - the mature planting, the established house reefs and that authentic Maldivian character that's almost impossible to recreate. Happily, every resort we stayed at - Dusit Thani, The Standard, Madifushi Private Island, OBLU Helengeli, Furaveri, Emerald Maldives and Emerald Faarufushi - sits on a natural island.

Some resorts elsewhere in the Maldives are built on reclaimed land, which can mean larger beaches and more room for facilities. But if you want that genuine, untouched island feel - and for us, nothing quite matches it - we'll always point you towards a naturally formed island.

�� Which resort had the best snorkelling?

Without question, OBLU Helengeli became the benchmark. The house reef was simply outstanding and accessible directly from the beach.

Dusit Thani also deserves a special mention thanks to its spectacular reef and location within Baa Atoll, while The Standard surprised us with excellent snorkelling straight from the ocean-side water villas.

�� Which resort would we recommend for a honeymoon?

If you're looking for intimate luxury, Emerald Faarufushi is difficult to beat. It combines outstanding food, exceptional service and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.

For complete privacy, Emma fell in love with Madifushi Private Island , describing it as the perfect castaway escape for couples celebrating something special.

If understated luxury and tranquillity are more your style, Dusit Thani would also be high on our list.

��‍��‍�� Which resort is best for families?

Emerald Maldives impressed us all with its spacious villas, excellent facilities and what Gilli described as the best kids' club she'd ever seen.

OBLU Helengeli also stood out thanks to its family rooms, friendly atmosphere and convenient speedboat transfer, while Furaveri offers a relaxed tropical setting that's ideal for families wanting an authentic Maldives experience.

��️ Which resort had the best food?

This sparked plenty of debate!

Overall, Emerald Faarufushi consistently impressed us with both its restaurants and buffet.

The Standard combined excellent food with a fun, social atmosphere, while Emerald Maldives offered fantastic variety across its multiple dining venues.

�� Which resort surprised us the most?

That honour goes to The Standard .

It completely challenged our expectations of what a Maldives resort could be.

Stylish, vibrant and full of personality, it somehow manages to combine luxury with a genuinely fun atmosphere. Pool parties, DJs, wellness experiences and incredible food make it unlike anywhere else we visited.

�� Which resort offers the best value?

If you're looking to experience the Maldives without venturing into ultra-luxury pricing, OBLU Helengeli and Furaveri both offer exceptional value. Helengeli excels for snorkelling and families, while Furaveri delivers beautiful villas and an authentic tropical island feel at a very competitive price point.

That said, value means different things to different people. If you're celebrating a honeymoon or a once-in-a-lifetime occasion, investing a little more in a resort like Dusit Thani or Emerald Faarufushi can be worth every penny. The exceptional service, attention to detail and peaceful atmosphere create the kind of experience that's hard to put a price on.

�� What's the biggest lesson we brought home?

Perhaps the biggest surprise wasn't a particular resort at all.

It was discovering just how different every single island feels.

Some are perfect for honeymooners.

Others are made for families.

Some are all about snorkelling, while others focus on gastronomy, wellness or lively entertainment.

As Emma summed it up perfectly:

"Selling the Maldives isn't about picking a pretty picture. It's about matching the right client to the right island."

We Did the Maldives Research Trip – So You Get the Best Bits (and Best Deals!)

At Travel Den, we like to go the extra mile to truly understand the destinations we sell – and sometimes that means jetting off to paradise... for research, of course.

Recently, our lovely travel expert Sian was “hard at work” exploring the Maldives with our partners at Hummingbird Travel – a team of luxury island specialists with over 30 years of experience in the region and a portfolio of over 200 stunning resorts.

She was lucky enough (jealous, us?) to visit four unique luxury islands in just seven days, and she's here to tell you all about it.

�� Stop 1: Makunudu Island – Tranquility in its Purest Form

Our first island was Makunudu , located in the North Malé Atoll – a peaceful, authentic escape back to nature and one of the oldest resorts in the Maldives. With just 36 charming beachfront bungalows, Makunudu is pure, unplugged magic.

The resort team welcomed us like old friends – warm, genuine, and clearly passionate about the island. Many of them have worked there since the resort first opened. I experienced my first-ever snorkelling trip here, and it was unforgettable – coral reefs, colourful fish, and that surreal underwater silence.

A sunset sail on a traditional Maldivian dhoni boat followed by a beachfront dinner rounded off a truly special stay. It might have been just 24 hours, but it felt like we’d been embraced by a little piece of paradise.

�� Stop 2: Veligandu – Ocean Glam & Five-Star Service

Next, we headed to the newly renovated Veligandu Maldives Resort in the North Ari Atoll – about an hour by speedboat or just 20 minutes by seaplane. The resort reopened in 2024 and it’s safe to say… it’s gorgeous.

The house reef here is so impressive that other resorts send guests over to snorkel it. And we did just that – swimming alongside black-tip reef sharks, turtles, and more tropical fish than I could count.

One standout feature? My very own Lifestyle Host, Ryan, who was contactable via WhatsApp for absolutely anything – restaurant bookings, golf buggy rides around the island, even sea sickness tablets!

The food was also next-level. We dined at Raalhu, the à la carte restaurant, and during the day I couldn’t get enough of Dhonveli, the buffet restaurant with a twist – pasta stations, made-to-order sandwiches, a huge bread selection, and a fresh juice bar.

I stayed in one of the new overwater pool villas, and honestly… I didn’t want to leave. Imagine lounging in your private pool, watching fish swim past beneath you. It’s the stuff of dreams!

�� Stop 3: Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru – Wellness, Conservation & Soul

Back on the North Malé Atoll, our third stop was the serene and soulful Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru. I immediately felt at home – the Asian influences, the lush greenery, the quiet beauty of the island.

Every villa here is beachfront with a private pool, and you can choose between sunrise or sunset views. A stay at Vabbinfaru also gives you access to Dhawa Ihuru, its sister island just five minutes away by boat. You can even split your stay between the two if you fancy a twin-centre holiday with two different vibes.

The spa was nothing short of incredible – it’s just been named one of the top 3 spas in the Maldives by Travel + Leisure Southeast Asia. But what really blew me away was the Marine Lab, run by an amazing team including Nick and Harry. They’re working on coral conservation, reef regeneration, and local clean-ups – and even hope to start collaborating with UK schools to educate kids on ocean sustainability. I could’ve listened to them talk for hours.

�� Final Stop: SO/ Maldives – Chic, Social & Seriously Cool

We finished our trip at the SO/ Maldives, part of the Crossroads group, and just a short speedboat ride from Malé. This resort is super cool and creative, with a lively beach club feel and a marina filled with bars, restaurants, and shops to explore.

It’s perfect for anyone who likes a bit of buzz and variety, as you can hop between SO/, SAii Lagoon, and Hard Rock Hotel Maldives, all connected by the Crossroads Marina.

We went on a sunset dolphin cruise, and were lucky enough to spot a huge pod of spinner dolphins – it was a magical moment I’ll never forget.

Back at the resort, DJs play by the pool, an array of cocktails, and the vibe is just effortlessly chic. With three restaurants, amazing service, and a more cosmopolitan feel, SO/ is great for groups, solo travellers, or anyone looking for a more social scene in paradise.

�� Final Thoughts

This trip was a whirlwind – but gave me such valuable insight into the diversity and magic of the Maldives. Whether you're travelling as a couple, family, solo adventurer or even multi-gen group, there’s an island to suit everyone.

A creative little boutique hotel near the old town, filled with art and character. Its rooftop pool and restaurant make it a peaceful hideaway close to the hustle and bustle.

Modern and sleek, with incredible views. If you like contemporary and comfortable hotels, this one’s for you.

Radisson Blu, Diplomatic Area

Friendly, easy-going, and well located. It’s not flashy, but it ticks all the right boxes for a comfortable stay.

Raffles Doha

I stopped in Doha for three nights and Raffles absolutely blew me away. The perfect blend of elegance and luxury without the fuss.

�� A Super Easy Twin-Centre Escape

One thing that made this trip so relaxing was how simple the travel was. The flight from Doha to Bahrain took just 20 minutes, and both airports were stress-free and smooth. If you’re after a twin-centre break without the usual hassle, this route is a great option, and it opens the door to even more possibilities in the region.

�� One for the Bucket List: VIP F1 Tour

A real highlight was the VIP tour of Bahrain’s Formula 1 circuit. Whether you’re into motorsport or not, getting behind the scenes of such an iconic venue is a brilliant experience. Private access, expert guides, and a chance to walk the track – it’s pretty unforgettable.

�� What Really Stood Out

Bahrain surprised me with how relaxed and genuine it felt. It’s polished, but not in-your-face. You’ll find beautiful mosques, lively souks, peaceful spas, and fantastic dining, but without the crowds and flashiness that bigger Gulf cities sometimes have.

��‍��‍��‍�� Yes, There Are All-Inclusive Resorts (With Drinks!)

Unlike a lot of the region, Bahrain actually offers true all-inclusive resorts, where your drinks are included too. For families or couples wanting an easy, no-surprises kind of break, it’s a fantastic option.

An immersive and authentic way to discover a new country with your family.

This Easter, my family and I set off on a different kind of holiday – a Family Group Tour across the beautiful landscapes of Vietnam, coupled with a few nights' stay at a luxurious beachfront villa for some much-needed relaxation after the tour had finished, creating the perfect blend between adventure and exploration, and chilling.

A trip of a lifetime!

From cruising through the Mekong Delta to exploring the bustling streets of Hanoi, it was a trip filled with adventure, discovery, and laughter. And what made it that extra bit more special was that we shared this with a group of like-minded and welcoming families. By the end, one thing was unanimous amongst us all: everyone would do it again.

At first glance, planning a holiday like this can seem overwhelming — so many people, logistics, and preferences to juggle. It’s only natural to assume our kids would gravitate toward hotel pools and all-inclusive access — they seem like the easiest spots to make friends and stay entertained. But we were surprised by how much they enjoyed the mix of adventure and relaxation: there truly was no time to be bored. These family tours are built with kids in mind, so one day you could be kayaking and the next you’re exploring by motorbike!

Since this was our first escorted family tour, we did have a few reservations about the “go-place-to-place” pace, but the kids said that they had the best time ever!

That means no late-night planning sessions, no frantic Googling on arrival, and no arguments about what to do next. Instant Friends (For Parents and Kids)

Travelling with other families meant the kids had new friends to make from day one — just as they would at an all-inclusive resort pool, but with the added bonus of sharing these amazing adventures together. It was so nice to see them form such a bond and friendship in such a short space of time, and it ultimately took away the worry about whether they were going to be entertained every day. As parents, we quickly bonded too, and it was nice to be able to enjoy Vietnam’s culture with other like-minded people.

On our Vietnam adventure, we covered an incredible amount – bustling cities, peaceful countryside, ancient temples, and underground caves – all in just 12 days.

We rode through cities on motorbikes, took traditional cooking classes in Hanoi, and a cyclo tour in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly known as Saigon) – and that’s to name just a few activities! All of this, with plenty of downtime built into the itinerary. It’s a brilliant way to fully explore a destination without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.
